Franz & Marie
A folk musical based on Georg Büchner's play Woyzeck. Franz, a soldier haunted by trauma, struggles to provide for his girlfriend Marie and their child while stationed at an isolated outpost.
It was commissioned two decades ago by the Korean company Acom and created by members of the Kentish band The Singing Loins. Teresa Howard has adapted that show for this production, performed by 14 actor-musicians. The music is by Rob Shepherd and Chris Broderick, with additional music and arrangements by Steven Edis, and Michael Oakley directs. Running time is approximately 2 hours 20 minutes including a 20-minute interval. The theatre warns of haze, smoke, strobe effects and adult themes.
Brenock O'Connor plays Woyzeck and Jade Oswald plays Marie. The cast also includes Steve Simmonds as Sergeant Ursid, Paula James as Zella, Richard Emerson Gould as Doctor Simian, Matthew Heywood as Drum Major Varg, Max Alexander-Taylor as André Schmitt, Mark Meadows as Captain Peccary, Eve Polycarpou as Vashti and Elaine Hua Jones as Kat. Michael Oakley directs, with choreography by Ben Wright.

How to book
Franz & Marie is at the Charing Cross Theatre, with seats from £20 to £65, and peak and off-peak prices are close. It's an intimate space with excellent sightlines; just avoid the extreme side seats.
Ways to pay less
For Franz & Marie, the best value is the Central Tickets seat-filler offer at £15, but it is only available for a limited time from Monday 28th September to Saturday 3rd October. Otherwise, book for the date you can make, as peak and off-peak prices are close. TKTS has had it almost every day at around 62% off, but with the run ending on 14th November, it is not something to count on.
