About The Venue

The Sam Wanamaker Playhouse is an intimate, candlelit indoor theatre, part of Shakespeare's Globe complex, opened in 2014. Named after the Globe's founder, it meticulously recreates a 17th-century Jacobean playhouse, offering a unique, historically authentic experience. Its design emphasizes natural acoustics and the warm glow of real candles, immersing audiences in early modern drama.

Seating

The first tier of seated benches, encircling the stage at a slightly elevated height. Seating is on backless wooden benches, which can be uncomfortable for longer performances, with legroom being relatively tight. Views are intimate and close to the action. However, the architectural design features numerous large wooden pillars supporting the galleries above, which can cause significant and severe restricted views, particularly in the side sections. Central seats in this gallery generally offer the least obstructed views, but even here, pillars can be a factor depending on the specific seat and staging. Some sections may be designated as 'Gentlemen's Rooms' offering a slightly more private, box-like experience, but still subject to pillar obstructions.

Toilets

Accessible: 2 near the shop (on either side of male and female toilets), 1 below Welcome Desk, 1 next to First Aid room (far end of Piazza), 1 at Guided Tour Entrance. Gender-neutral washrooms next to the shop.
