The Quiet Revolution of Laurent Clerc
The Quiet Revolution of Laurent Clerc is a new play by Carol Schneider, directed by Joe Cacaci. Inspired by the life of ‘The Father of the Deaf’ Laurent Clerc, the story follows the ambitious Deaf pioneer as he arrives in America from France in 1816. Alongside Reverend Thomas Gallaudet, Clerc establishes a school for Deaf children.
However, his life is complicated when he falls in love with a Deaf woman, forcing him to choose between his devotion to the institution and his personal future. The production features Alim Jadavji as Thomas Gallaudet and Zoë McWhinney as Eliza Boardman. It is performed through four modalities of sign language, spoken English, French, and creative captions. Recommended for ages 14+.
