August Wilson's Gem of the Ocean
Set in 1904 in Pittsburgh's Hill District, August Wilson's play follows Aunt Ester, a matriarch said to be 285 years old, and a young man from Alabama, Citizen Barlow, who seeks redemption on a lyrical journey of spiritual awakening into the City of Bones.
Written in 2003, it is part of Wilson's ten-play chronicle of the African-American experience in the twentieth century, one play for each decade. Young Vic artistic director Nadia Fall directs, in what is billed as the first UK staging of the play in 20 years. The cast has not yet been announced.
